Drukhi Norn

Norn Prince. Only son of Ekimeniso Blackstaff and Utuk'ku Silvermask. Sometimes called the "White Prince".

Husband of Nenais'u. His mother and father opposed the marriage, because Nenais'u was Sithi, "of the traitorous, mortal-loving clan that opposed them" (Aditu, TGAT p.778).

After Nenais'u's death Drukhi went mad. He swore to kill all the mortals he could find, and was confined by the men of Nenais'u's clan, whereupon he died. Aditu states he "made himself die" in TGAT ch.26 p.779, while Tanahaya and others say he was "killed by mortals" in EOG p.436. This could be metaphor since Mortals began his sorrow when killing Nenais'u.

The method of Drukhi's death is left disputed, with different people having different thoughts about it.

  • "Do you also disbelieve that Drukhi killed himself? Did the mortals murder him too, as the Hikeda'ya claim?" Hakatri to Ineluki, BTW p. 94
  • "'Do you mean he killed himself?' 'Not as you think of it, Seoman. No, rather Drukhi just...stopped living. When he was found lying dead in the Si'injan'dre Cave, Utuk'ku and Ekimenso took their clan and went north, swearing that they would never again live with Jenjiyana's people.'" Aditu to Simon, TGAT p.780
  • "Queen Utuk'hu's son Drukhi was killed by mortals." Tanahaya to Morgan. EOG p.436

This event, started with Nenais'u's death, brought about the split between the Zida'ya and the Hikeda'ya.

After his death, Utuk'ku erected statues of him throughout Nakkiga, and took to wearing all white in mourning. The rest of the Norns also adopted this practice, and now wear only shades of black and white in both clothing and hair.

Potential Bloodline[]

Utuk'ku calls Amerasu "Grand daughter" twice in Witness conversations[1][2], and Amerasu refers to her publicly as "My great-great grandmother"[2] and Eolair solidifies this in the later-published Witchwood crown[3]. Because Drukhi is Utuk'ku's only son, that indicates that Drukhi and Nenais'u had a child - possibly Senditu - making Drukhi a part of the current Sa'onserei ancestry. If this is true it also indicates that Drukhi and Nenais'u were coupled before they fled the Garden, as Amerasu was born while on the Great Eight Ships.

The pre-exodus marriage timeline is potentially contradicted by Aditu saying Utuk'ku opposed their union due to Nenais'u being of a "traitorous, mortal-loving clan that opposed them"[4]; indicating that mortals were already known to them. However, Tanahaya relates to Morgan that the splitting of the Keida'ya into the factions of Zida'ya and Hikeda'ya happened in the Garden, with ideological differences between those who followed Hamakho the Wormslayer from those who agreed with his wife, Sa'onsera the Preserver (first Sa'onsera). Cheifly that Sa'onsera believed in living harmoniously with all creatures, and Hamakho argued for destroying anything that threatened the Keida'ya[5]. This could have been the "mortal loving" reason for Utuk'ku's opposition to the marriage, long before they came to Osten Ard.

Notes and Trivia[]

Utuk'ku's chamber is surrounded in images of Drukhi's face.

"Faces. They were the first thing he saw, spread across every wall of the vast chamber and stretched across its ceiling as well--huge faces, some staring nobly, some grimacing in agony; and every face belonged to the same person. Viyeki has seen those features a thousand times on monuments and murals. He knew them as well as those of his own family. It was Drukhi the White Prince, the queen's martyred son, who stared at this from all directions..." TWC p.59
